Where to Place Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Your Home

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly. It's produced by burning fuels like gasoline, wood, natural gas, and propane. Inhaling CO can cause flu-like symptoms, dizziness, nausea, and even death. Having working carbon monoxide alarms in your home is crucial to protect yourself and your family from CO poisoning.

Here are the key places to install carbon monoxide alarms in your home:

  • Outside each sleeping area: Install an alarm on every level of your home, outside each bedroom door. This ensures that the CO alarm will wake you up if carbon monoxide levels rise while you are sleeping.
  • On every floor of your home: If your home has multiple floors, install at least one CO detector on each floor, regardless of whether there are bedrooms on that floor. This provides additional protection throughout the home.
  • Near fuel-burning appliances: Install an alarm within 15 feet of any fuel-burning appliance in your home, such as furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, and gas ranges.

Additional tips for placement:

  • Avoid placing alarms in dead zones: Don't install CO alarms in corners, behind furniture, or on high ceilings. These locations can prevent the alarm from detecting CO properly.
  • Keep them away from vents and windows: Avoid placing alarms near vents, windows, or doors where drafts could interfere with their operation.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions: Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific installation guidance.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • Replace the batteries in your CO alarms every year.
  • Test your CO alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly.
  • Never ignore a CO alarm if it goes off. Evacuate your home immediately and call 911.
